How we choose products
A product has to give us a good reason to include it. Here’s what we look for, what we check, and what never influences us.
What we look for
A find should do at least one of these things well — and the best do several.
Genuinely useful
It makes daily life with a dog easier, or solves a real problem.
Unusual
Something you probably haven’t seen before.
Beautifully made
Good materials, careful making, built to last.
Personalised
Made for one dog or one person in particular.
Independent or UK-made
Supports a small business or a British maker.
Right for a life stage
Particularly helpful for puppies, or for older dogs.
Comfort
Makes a dog more comfortable at home or away.
A thoughtful gift
Or simply has an interesting story behind it.
What we check
Before a find appears on the site, we check the details against the maker’s or retailer’s own information:
- the exact product name and who makes it
- the price, and the date we checked it
- any claim that it’s made in the UK, handmade or personalised
- that the link goes to the right product and it’s available
- that we have permission to use any product photograph
If we can’t confirm something, we leave it out rather than guess.
What “Why we picked it” means
Each find carries a short note explaining our reasons — its design, materials, what it’s useful for, who makes it. It’s our editorial judgement based on checkable facts. It isn’t a review, and unless we say otherwise, it doesn’t mean we’ve tested the product ourselves.
What never influences us
- Commission. We never choose a product because it pays more, or leave one out because it pays nothing.
- Sponsored content. Our regular finds are chosen by us, on their merits. If a specific piece of content is sponsored or part of a paid partnership, it will be clearly labelled.
- Free samples. If a maker ever sends us something, we’ll say so on that product.
Things we won’t do
- Show star ratings, review counts or testimonials we haven’t earned.
- Invent urgency — “only 2 left!”, countdown timers and the like.
- Make health claims about products. Anything to do with your dog’s health is a conversation for your vet.
Corrections
Prices change and products are discontinued. If you spot something out of date or wrong, please let us know and we’ll fix it.
Some links on Unique Dog Finds are affiliate links. If you buy through one of these links, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Sponsored content and paid partnerships will always be clearly labelled. How we’re funded.
