How it works
Real names, and new ones that sound right
You get two kinds of name. Established names come from a list of 684 dog names we’ve gathered by hand — the ones that start with, contain or sound like what you typed, plus names on the same theme. Type “Moon” and you’ll also see Luna, Nova and Comet.
Original ideas are new. The generator takes the sounds in your word and builds pronounceable names around them, so “Devon” might become Devie, Devlo or Zevon. They’re invented, so they have no history or meaning — say one out loud and see if it fits.
We haven’t included meanings for any name. Name meanings are often repeated online without a reliable source, and we’d rather leave them out than guess.
Tips for choosing
- Say it out loud a few times, as if you were calling across a park.
- One or two syllables are easiest to call.
- Try to avoid names that sound like everyday cues, such as “sit”, “stay” or “no”.
- If you’re getting an ID tag, remember that in Great Britain the law requires the owner’s name and address on the collar or tag — the dog’s name is optional.
